The airbag light is part of your Chevy’s Supplement Restricted System (SRS). It connects the airbag system to the vehicle’s seat belt system.
Whenever you turn on your car, the airbag light turns on in 5-7 seconds before turning off. It means displaying a normal and successful internal system check.
However, when the light in the airbag never flashes or blinks, abnormal and failed internal system checks are indicated. In this case, resetting your Chevy’s airbag light becomes important and necessary.
In this article, we are going to learn how to easily reset your Chevy airbag light. Get ready for the DIY.
How to Reset Airbag Light on Chevy?
Now, we will learn how to read error codes from airbag modules and clean them properly. For the following procedure you need an important product- a Chevy airbag scan tool. In this case, if you use a generic OBD-II scanner, if the airbag codes are present and the airbag light is on, it will not show any fault codes.
The following steps are taken as a solution:
You will find the Onboard Diagnostic Port under your Chevrolet Dashboard. It is also known as OBD-II port. This port is present in all 1996 and new Chevrolet.
Now, plug your Chevrolet Airbag Scan Tool into the 16 pin OBD2 port. Since the port is trapezoid-shaped, it allows you to plug the scanner in one direction only.
Turn on the ignition but do not start the engine. If your Chevy has the Start/Stop button feature, press that button instead of the brake pedal.
Turn on the Chevy Airbag Scanner. When the Chevy’s ignition is turned on once or goes to position II, the scanner should be turned on. Now wait for the scanner to fully activate. When turned on, select Chevrolet from the menu.
Select your Chevy model by following the prompts on the Diagnostic Scanner. Then manually select the “Airbag System” option. Scroll down to read any code detected.
Now, scan your Chevy for the airbag fault code. If you retrieve a code and it is in “Current” or “Present” state, you need to fix that problem first, then clear the airbag light.
If the condition of the code is “Past” or “Stored”, then understand that clearing the code is OK. An example of this would be an airbag fault code triggered by the battery voltage will be cleared once you recharge the battery.
Turn off the ignition when your Chevy airbag light is clean. Turn on the ignition again to make sure the airbag light is reset.
Now, go back to the Airbag / SRS control unit.
Scroll to the bottom of the screen and press “Enter” to delete the fault codes.
If you do not fix the problem properly, the airbag light will come back on as soon as the problem is detected.
Chevy Airbag Lights Are on, but No Code.
It also happens that you are scanning the car with an OBD-II scanner but you are not getting any code. The reason for this is that you may be using a generic scanner that is unable to access the Chevy Airbag module. The solution is to use a Chevy airbag scanner instead of a generic scanner.
Can You Reset Airbag Lights Without Tools?
In some older models, it is possible to reset the airbag light without a scanner. In this case, the car’s battery terminals need to be removed. Connector plugs may have loose wires or corrosion. Check the condition of the cable under the driver or passenger seat to check it. Spray with electronic cleaner to clean connector plugs. Finally, restart your car.
Can You Drive With Airbag Lights on?
When there is a problem with your Chevy system, the airbag lights up. It is possible that if you have an accident, the airbag will not be installed because of this error. Therefore, we do not recommend driving until your faulty system has been fixed. As a conscious person, such important precautions should not be ignored.
Where Is the Airbag Sensor?
Your Chevy’s airbag sensor is located inside the engine. The safety sensor, on the other hand, is located inside the car’s passenger compartment. This safety sensor is needed to measure the intensity of a collision when the impact is above a certain threshold to justify airbag release.
Will the Airbag Light Be Reset if the Battery Is Disconnected?
Non-volatile memory is used in many airbag systems. So if you remove the battery power, they will not be removed. A scanner will be needed to delete these. But even if you delete it, the light with which it was initially turned on will restart and you can do nothing.
Keeping your Chevy’s airbag light on may not be a problem for your safe driving. However, even small problems related to automobiles, if not solved quickly, later become large and cost you a lot of money. So, do not neglect this problem too.
